02 alpine farmhouse c1746 - conversion

la Riviere Enverse, French Alps

450m²

This uninhabited building had enormous character and a great position on a plateau with 270˚views which the client wanted to maximise on. The overall building of 450m2 was split into an owner’s apartment of 90m2 and a commercial holiday chalet of 360m2.

The brief was for luxurious accommodation with comfortable spaces, connection to the alpine landscape and a mix of modern fittings with rustic materials. The client was also keen to keep and reuse as much of the original building’s wood as possible. Particular technical challenges to resolve included structural beam calculations for a large new 20m2 balcony supporting a huge hot tub.

Our solution involved several design elements that fused vernacular forms - stone walls masonry, open barn spacing, generous roof overhangs - with more modern elements such as large expanses of glass. The character of this ancient Savoyarde building was reinforced by removing concrete that covered the external stone facade and painstakingly repointing the exposed stonework.

We created the design, managed the planning application process, selected all materials and fittings, and project managed this project
