22   luxurious new build chalet

  • 517m² new build

  • Samoëns, French Alps

  • 2016 to 2017 : design & planning application (approved)

Initially this design was based on renovating and extending an existing chalet on the site but after an initial design concept was presented to the local planning officer, I obtained permission to demolish the existing 250m² chalet which gave far more opportunities to achieve my client’s objectives. The existing chalet was a typical 1970s style and build with internal spaces and window openings that were relatively small, by today’s standards, for a chalet of this size. The demolition permit was issued on condition that the final project was based on certain elements of the original building design - for example we were required to keep the existing volume and exact ridge height. The clients’ brief meant we required double the existing habitable space to create five large ensuite bedrooms, a games room, a cinema room, extensive wine cellar, spacious open plan living areas, and an indoor swimming pool. The demolition permit was issued on condition that the final project was based on certain elements of the original building design - for example we were required to keep the existing volume and exact ridge height. The design had six bedrooms all with ensuite bathrooms, living and leisure areas including a swimming pool and a gym. The underground rooms included space for utilities, swimming room tech rooms, and a triple garage. Overall, the scheme had split level, creating seven floors within it which created interest and broke up the space. The clients’ plan was to rent the property as a luxury ski chalet during the winter. This design was the first of a three-chalet development project (overview given in Project 21).
