23   renovation & extension of 1970s family house

This project involved the renovation and extension of a 1970s chalet on a site that was relatively flat for the mountains. The client’s initial brief was to create a separate self-contained annex, convert an existing double garage into bedrooms, create a new entrance hall, double garage, and swimming pool plus separate the ground floor rooms to become a two-bedroom apartment with its own access and parking space. The client also wanted to make the exterior of the chalet more attractive for their newly acquired family home, so my design replaced the existing cladding with new vertical cladding of larch or reclaimed old wood, in two different widths. All windows and doors were to be replaced with double glazing to improve energy efficiency and the frames were to be matt grey metal to give a modern aesthetic. The render on the ground floor would be replaced and be a light grey to tie the overall scheme together. Externally, in addition to three new terraces I proposed a partial demolition of the unattractive conifers and poorly maintained concrete walls to the east, south and west of the plot. The new garage extension was partially buried and created a flat terrasse for a hot tub. After obtaining approval in principle from the mairie (local council), subject to a few small changes, the client decided on a much smaller project due to personal finance changes. I obtained permission for the small project thus the project shown here remains as a concept. *
