30   conversion of garage into home office

Initially the brief was for a change of use for the storage area in a huge loft space above a two-storey double garage built in the 1990s. The client wanted a fully independent apartment; therefore, the design included a kitchen on the ground floor but this was dropped at the design development stage when the brief changed to a multi-use room - a bedroom or an office with space for gym. The clients were interested in design and sought a creative approach for their project. My initial sketch proposal included a double height entrance hall and a dramatic change to both the external appearance and the internal space with expansive cathedral style glazing opening distant views towards the south downs. There were unfinished blockwork walls and chipboard floors. The upgrades included fully insulating the underside of the roof and external walls plus new oil-fired heating system. A new staircase was designed with bespoke handrails and balustrade - armoured glass panels with etched glass pattern and beech wood joinery were used. A one of a kind walk in shower was made in a spiral design creating enticing entrance and unique feeling of privacy and openness. To create further interest the lighting scheme included tension wire suspended lighting and ceiling spotlights laid out in opposing crescent shapes. The eggshell blue colour for the walls and the floor finish were selected by the client.
