On the grounds of a traditional thatched 16th-century Suffolk house was an unused space above the stable block and a small extension to the main house, created in the 1980s. The brief was to convert these spaces into holiday accommodation, on a modest budget. The unused area above the stables was reconfigured to create two bedrooms and a living space with a spiral staircase renovated and repositioned to give access to ground floor spaces which were converted into a bathroom and kitchen, with access to a private garden from the kitchen. The small 1980s extension, which is attached to the main house, was converted into a comfortable one-bedroom cottage with the addition of a new conservatory to create a dining area with beautiful countryside views. The extension was two storeys but the top floor space had very limited headroom and so we created two dormer structures to increase that and to give more light in the form of two new windows. Both cottages were renovated on a modest budget and in a traditional country cottage style which tied in with the style of the 16th-century main house and its interior decoration.
