2019 : conceptual design
This client wanted a new build chalet that created a dramatic architectural statement whilst also reflecting the local vernacular and materials. The client wanted a bold design experience for his party lifestyle rather than a cosy family home. The design had to take this into consideration whilst also working with avalanche and landslide zone limitations on the site, and within the limitations of a historical zone in an area classified as of outstanding natural beauty. The client already owned one chalet on this steep site, and he planned to split the site for the two separate properties. He commissioned a Design & Feasibility Report for this project so he could assess my design flair and expertise. The steepness of the site provided great opportunities for partial burial of sections of the building which lessened the overall impact of the size of the chalet. The south-west fall line gave the best opportunity for maximising sunlight into the interior spaces and the design included large expanses of glazing to exploit views, plus a triple height, open living space. The design solution was a chalet split across several levels to work with the steep terrain with different angled walls that created a sense of play as well as maximising on views. Building into the hillside gave options for parking and utility spaces, as well as creating a cinema room which enabled the creation of distinct bedrooms each with a beautiful view and private outside terrace. The result was an architecturally interesting and bold chalet that maximised space and light whilst dealing creatively with the challenges of a steep site. Part of the design incorporated a fun element of a private, mini funicular giving access from the ground parking level up to the new chalet. The terracing and landscaping plan included planting to provide natural screening between the existing and the new designed chalet. *
